Get Fundraising
We don’t want anyone to be put off by the costs of going on the Latino Experience, becoming a Short Term Volunteer. It is not cheap to go to South America, but please don’t let money be a problem. Money can be raised in a variety of ways, through your church, your diocese or equivalent, through businesses and individuals. It is important to let your local Church and mission committee know your plans, both because they may be able to help you financially, but more importantly because they will be able to provide you with the prayer backing and home support that you will need. Many people will want to support you, and if you’re part of a Latino Experience team, you could get together and do some joint fundraising, but remember that it is your decision to join a Latino Experience team or become a Short Term Volunteer, and mission often involves personal sacrifice.
Here’s some ideas for raising the money (not all of them will be suitable for everyone)
- Get a part time job and save up.
- Sponsored activities - car washing, silence, fasting, sport, shows ...
- Selling activities - car boot/garage sale, jumble, cakes, plants ...
- “Parable of the talents” - each person taking part, perhaps your youth group, is given a small amount of money (say £2) and told to invest it wisely, to make a profit... (i.e. car washing, making something to sell, etc).
- Write to your local newspaper or radio station who may be willing to run an article for you and thereby attract some funding.
- Inform your school/college about your plans - they may be willing to help.
- Coffee morning, to let people know about what you are doing and how much it will cost!
- Design your own Christmas/ Easter/ Birthday cards for sale at the appropriate season.
- Write to local businesses and Charitable trusts. Last year Man Utd gave us some footballs for Brazil, you can blag anything if you try!
