San Lucas is an Anglican school situated in the Andean city of Arequipa. It is run by the Diocese of Perú. Despite outward appearances, Perú is a poor country with the majority of the population lacking in education. The vision for the school has always been to provide an affordable and a quality education for young people in the shanty areas. Their aim is to make a difference to the prospects of present and future generations. san lucas school
The key elements to the success of this school are English as second language taught by a native English speaker and computer courses for all grade levels. Following the purchase of a new site - quite simply a levelled piece of ground - San Lucas began the expansion into secondary education in 2005 by adding annually a new school year together with the specialist teachers needed to support the extra students. Over the next few years new classrooms need to be built every year so this is a big and exciting venture. When the project is complete there will be 3 classrooms for Early Years, 12 for primary and 10 for secondary: a total of 25. San Lucas School
How much?
During 2007/08 the next stage of the project involves building a block of 4 classrooms & 2 toilet facilities
. The total cost of this work is £28,000 ($55,000) and work will be able to start when one third of this money has been provided. This total includes furnishing (desks, chairs, whiteboard, shelving and a teacher's desk) which, as a guide is estimated at £60 per pupil in a class of 35. As a separate issue, some PCs have been purchased this year to begin equipping the computer lab but there is still a need for more - at £320 each
Thank you!
Rev'd Juan Carlos Revilla, chaplain to the school writes: "Thank you for your kindness and your desire to support the work of Jesus Christ here in Arequipa, Perú. These are dreams that we leave in God's hands - and it is with hope that we are sharing these dreams with you

Esperanza Foster Home, Asuncion, Paraguay
What?
A project launched to bring hope to some of the abandoned babies and young children of Paraguay. "Esperanza" ("Hope") foster home provides a caring and safe environment for children awaiting investigation of their family circumstances and legal procedures for adoption. Local Christian houseparents and volunteers provide a family environment, caring for a maximum of 5 children under the age of five at any one time.

How much?

Overall costs are around £15,000 per annum.
Benefits
Of the many babies and young children abandoned each year in Paraguay, 50 become the responsibility of the State. The church's vision is to make a difference to some of these lives, while relieving pressure on the overcrowded and under-resourced home already run by the Adoption Centre.
