The Library of the South American Mission Society
The Medlock Room, Handsworth Parish Centre,
Handsworth Road, Sheffield S13 9BZ
The Library's collections include a large number of nineteenth-century works including general descriptions of the countries, travellers' accounts and missionaries' diaries.
There is a small collection of works in Amerindian languages, mostly translations of parts of the Bible or New Testament, and dictionaries in these languages, mainly compiled by missionaries.
The geographical coverage reflects the areas in which SAMS has been active: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay. Most of the works concern mission and mission activities, with some material on liberation theology, but subjects covered include anthropology and social welfare, and there are some contemporary background works on the countries.
The library holds around 1,200 books. It is predominantly a research archive, though a small number of books are added each year.
There is some important archive material, including photographic material, minute books, diaries (including those of the founder of SAMS, Captain Allen F. Gardiner, R.N., most notably his final one found by his body in Tierra del Fuego in 1852), and a full set of the Society's magazine (now known as SHARE) from its inception in 1867.
The collection is predominantly on open access to accredited users.
Microform Academic Publishers hold a set of 17 reels of microfilm containing 'Records from the archive of the South American Missionary Society'. This includes most of the material up to 1919, including the journals of Allen Gardiner, Edward Bernau and Adolfo Henriksen, General Committee Minutes from 1844 and the Society's magazine.
